I have a Hitachi Travelstar 100 GB HTS541010G9AT00 That appears to have a PCB issue. When connected with the original PCB, the drive doesn't spin. I purchased a pcb from the same model hard drive with a mfg date of 1 month prior to the original. With this installed, the drive spins, but still isn't recognized. Is there another step that I ma missing or any thing that needs to be swapped from the original pcb to the new one?

You need to transplant the ROM from the old board to the new.

Yes, agree with jono, copy/move the nvram from the original.

Nvram is unique for this family.

Also, make sure the 1st two lines on the sticker on the PCB match.

The first two lines on the sticker do match. What is the best way to desolder the nvram? I was having a togh time with that last night with a pencil iron/solder wick combo

Hot air station and Soldering iron would do your work , if u are not good at soldering find someone with good soldering/desoldering skills .

I have the same issue with my HTS541010G9AT00. Did you resolve yours? I'm about to purchase the PCB but feel nervous b/c I've never done anything like this. Do you have instructions or diagrams on the repair for a total newbie?

Searched Google for a couple of hours but didn't find much. There was a site that mentioned replacing the 8 PIN EEPROM IC which made it confusing.

I've taken the HDD out of it's casing but haven't removed the PCB yet. Is the NVRAM an obvious piece on the PCB?

Thanks for the help so far. I'm going to try repairing this HDD on my own. I'm still on the hunt for parts and finding out it's not that easy.

Anybody have luck finding vendors who sell PC boards? I've looked around but only found an unreliable ebay seller. If anybody can help me identify the NVRAM chip I would greatly appreciate it.

I can supply you a PCB no problem, but it ain't gonna work!

The NVRAM on board is virtually unique, as it points to addresses on the SA etc..

I have this Hitachi Travelstar HTS424040M9AT00 - a 40GB drive, I have nearly the same problem " Drive doesnt even spin when connected to the computer through the portable casing "

The cable has some loose connection, I bought two USB ports and soldered it, Mostly I messed up connecting the wrong way to the USB pins i.e. at both the ends, and gave the power, the drive remains quiet, its dead . I expected the drive to be detected but it failed to do so. Where might have the things gone wrong, I changed the casing, nothing happened, still the drive behaves the same, what might have gone wrong pls help me !!!
