I've got a bad 400 GB Hitachi Deskstar that won't spin up. The motor ohms fine and the PCB is not the problem.

Before I open this bad boy up (10 heads / 5 platters) I would like to know if:

1. Bearing seizures are common on this model;

2. What kind of success people are having with head/platter transplants;

3. If the bearing can be loosened successfully without having to do step 2

Thx

Was the drive dropped? I bet yes... Then the axis is bent and PS is last resort.

Thanks, BlackST.

The client swore the drive wasn't mishandled or abused . . . .

;-)

Of course they do, a seized bearing is not so uncommon, anyway.
