I have the following problem, when I load the drive with loader and try to write to sa I receive an error. Should I also load the ram image from the working drive? I am not sure where the problem is, because I have no problem reading the service area. Only the G_LIST module cannot be read. And last question what can be done if there are bad sectors in sa?

Most probably the problem is elsewhere and not related to SA, but assuming all the rest is ok (it's an ATHENA.... )... what are you using to access SA ?

OK thank you for your reply. I am using the free hddrepair. The things are quite strange. I can read every module from sa except G-LIST. I doubt there is problem with with the SRV or RCT modules. I wonder if I should load the ram also except the loader. And what happens if I have bad sectors in sa, can I do something to remap these sectors.

Basically RAM is not needed. But instead U might be using the wrong loader...

I hoped that hddrepair is my cheap sollution but thanks anyway. It seem if I cannot write to sa it is not possible to repair this old maxtor. Well at least I will get two neodymium magnets .

Hey dick, thanks for the link. I downloaded the proggy from their site: http://www.salvationdata.com/data-recovery-freewares/maxtor-firmware-c.htm. And what a strange coincidence I have the exactly same model they are refering Maxtor 541DX (2B020H1 2B010H1). I booted from the floppy unpatiently and tried to repair the hdd. I have to admit they have made really simple "one click" GUI. When I tabbed on "Repair Now" button the proggy displayd something like:
table1 error....repaired
table2 error....repaired
table3 error....repaired
(ain't that simple )
with nice red letters. But what a suprise when I restarted the pc the drive didn't start. I tried the procedure a couple of times but it didn't help and only displayed the same result. I guess there is something wrong with the adaptives after all. Any more suggestions are welcomed.

Didn't you say that there were bad UBAs ? How do you expect that simple program to work ?

I think it is time for asking for a pro here...
