So you are giving me hints?

I found a guy with the same problem. He also got his drive at Fry's.

The firmware on those drives really is is different? :?

Reasons to keep it
1)RMAs are usually painfully annoying

that's interesting experience

2)I can't erase the drive if I can't access it

and why do you need to erase it?

3)There is bank account and credit card info on that drive

there is a bank account number on each check you sign - have you been robbed every time you signed a check?
And I guess every time you paying with you credit card in grocery store you probably looking for pirates around

Are there funny clowns? Almost 90% of all recovery drives from personal users have some stuff. It looks like HDD manufatures should sell drives with complete set of videos and pictures to save users's time and money

You had complete step by step guide and you failed. Beleive me "fixing things" is not your good side

@ Doomer : reply of the week award.
@ Mike : I think that a pro near you can fix your disk AND erase everything (SS) for much less than 100$. It's different from data recovery, you need only the drive, right?

That would actually be helpful. I'll be willing to take a long drive if necessary. Could you please pm me with the contact information?

I am at the opposite corner of the world : search this forum for a pro near you and ask him. It's easier. You only need a firmware fix AND the drive recertified. P.s. Don't expect to have it done in front of you or while you wait. It will take about 2 days.

I think you should just put a hammer through it and buy another drive. Save you time, petrol (GAS) and money. They are cheap enough.

Uh.. no, currently there is a strong request for FIXING hard drives at a reasonable price. This can be one. Obviously is not a good idea to drive 200 KM. to do it. NOTE : in this case for me FIXING means NO FIXING THE FW ONLY. Means FIXING AND DESTROY ALL DATA IN IT. Forget having a 2-300$ job done for 20-30.

Sorry to reopen a very old thread, but...

I'm also running into this "Unknown Diag Cmd" ... 12CC4 message. I have two 'affected' seagate 7200.11 drives, both purchased at Fry's Electronics (the only other mention of this "Unknown Diag Cmd" error online says the drive was from Fry's).

I am able to spin the drive up and down using the Serial -> TTL adapter, but when I issue the SMART reset, it gives me the 12CC4 message.

I'm wondering if there's a different approach to fixing this: replace the entire board with one from a near-identical drive... Is the firmware ON the board? Or is it inside the case? If it's on the board, is it "married" to the drive inside? Maybe screwing a board with new firmware onto the drive would allow it to magically work? Maybe a long shot...

Thanks for your help.

PS, for background see "The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs - MSFN Forums" via google (the forum is down at the moment) or other google results with a similar name.

See the following technical bulletin:

Seagate were at one time offering free data recovery services to those customers whose drives were affected by the bug. This may still be the case.

You might notice that this person has already tried that and it didn't work

And there you have it, it is not a seagate as it has OEM firmware, so the fix will not work on OEM drives - only Seagate. So you will need to send it to a pro (+data) or return it to OEM for replacement (-data)

Dwoooo

At my facility we have done the same procedure on hundreds of OEM drives.
